Hey everyone! I'm super excited because I'm finally planning my very first solo backpacking trip to Europe this summer. I've been dreaming about this for ages, but now that it's real, I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed by all the choices! I'm looking at about 2-3 weeks and aiming for a mix of culture, history, and some scenic beauty. What are some classic first-timer friendly routes or countries you'd recommend, especially for someone traveling alone? Also, I'm trying to stick to a reasonable budget, so any tips on affordable accommodation, transport (Eurail pass vs. individual tickets?), and saving money on food would be incredibly helpful. Any must-have gear or crucial safety advice for a solo female traveler would also be much appreciated. Thanks in advance for your wisdom!

Honestly, start with Central Europe! Prague, Budapest, and Vienna are super easy to navigate, affordable, and very safe for solo travelers.

I second the Central Europe route. Plus, the train connections between those cities are excellent and much cheaper than flying.

Don't bother with a Eurail pass if you're only visiting a few countries. Just book individual tickets in advance on Omio or Trainline; you'll save a ton of money.

For your first time, stick to the 'Banana Pancake' trail of Europe: London, Paris, and Amsterdam. It's touristy for a reason-it's easy to meet people in hostels there.

Agree with London/Paris, but they are expensive! If you're on a budget, look into the Balkans. Albania and Montenegro are stunning and your money will go so much further.

Safety-wise, always keep a dummy wallet with a little bit of cash and a few old cards in your pocket. Keep your real passport and credit cards locked in your hostel locker.

Hostelworld is your best friend. Read the reviews carefully, especially the ones from other solo women. If it has a high rating for 'atmosphere,' you'll definitely make friends.

That's a great tip! I also always pack a portable power bank because you don't want your phone dying while navigating a new city.

Honestly, just pack light. You really don't need as many clothes as you think. A 40L backpack is the sweet spot.

Exactly! If you can't carry your bag up four flights of stairs easily, it's too heavy. Trust me, I learned that the hard way.

Check out 'Free Walking Tours' in every city you visit. They are usually tip-based, and it's the best way to get your bearings and meet other solo travelers on day one.

I've done those in Spain and Italy! They are great, but definitely tip the guide well, they usually work for free.

Are you planning on using hostels? I've found that female-only dorms are a game changer for peace of mind.

I'm planning a similar trip, thanks for asking this! What time of year are you going?

Try to avoid eating in the main tourist squares. Walk three or four blocks away and you'll find the same food for half the price.

Good advice. Also, look for 'menu del dia' in Spain-it's a fixed-price lunch that is usually a steal.

Don't overplan. Leave some 'empty' days in your schedule. You'll end up wanting to stay longer in a city you love or moving on from one you don't.

This is so true. Every time I try to stick to a rigid schedule, I get stressed out. Flexibility is key when backpacking.

Just go for it! You'll be nervous until you land, but once you're there, you'll realize how capable you are. Have the best time!
