I am planning my first big trip to Europe this fall and I am honestly overwhelmed by how much I need to pack. I plan on visiting London, Paris, and then heading down to Rome, so I expect the weather to shift quite a bit. Does anyone have a solid strategy for layering clothes so I don't end up carrying a massive suitcase everywhere? I want to travel light with just a carry-on if possible, but I'm worried about being underprepared for sudden rain or colder evenings. Any advice on essential items or brands that hold up well would be super helpful.

Packing for fall in Europe is definitely tricky because of the temperature swings. My biggest tip is to stick to a strict color palette-everything you pack should match everything else. That way you can mix and match layers without carrying a ton of clothes.

I totally agree with the color palette advice. I usually pack all neutrals and maybe one or two colorful scarves to change up the look. It keeps the suitcase weight down significantly.

Forget the massive suitcase, you really don't want to be dragging that over cobblestones in Rome or up subway stairs in Paris. A solid 40L travel backpack is your best friend.

Make sure you invest in a decent lightweight, packable rain jacket. It takes up almost no space and is a total lifesaver when you get caught in a sudden London downpour.

Echoing the rain jacket advice! I bought an Uniqlo blocktech parka for my last trip and it was perfect for layering over a sweater.

Don't forget to pack a pair of really comfortable walking shoes. You will be walking miles every single day, and if your feet hurt, the whole trip suffers.

Does anyone have a specific brand of walking shoe they recommend that doesn't look like a giant sneaker?

Look into Allbirds or Ecco. They look decent enough for a nice dinner in Paris but are comfortable enough for sightseeing all day.

Packing cubes are non-negotiable if you want to stick to a carry-on. They compress everything and keep your bag organized.

I use packing cubes too, but honestly, rolling your clothes works just as well if you're on a budget.

Check the weather reports right before you leave, but don't obsess over them. Europe in the fall is unpredictable regardless.

Exactly, just bring layers. A base layer, a light sweater, and a windbreaker will get you through almost anything you encounter in London or Rome.

Bring a universal travel adapter. You don't want to be hunting for one once you land.

And bring a small portable power bank! You'll be using your phone for navigation and photos constantly, and the battery drains so fast.

I'd suggest leaving some space in your bag for souvenirs. If you pack a full carry-on, you'll have nowhere to put anything you buy along the way.

Great point. I always pack an extra foldable duffel bag just in case I end up buying too much stuff.
