I'm heading to Europe in mid-January for a mix of city walking and a few days in the Alps, and I'm honestly struggling to figure out how to pack light. I really don't want to lug a massive suitcase around on trains and cobblestone streets, but I'm worried about being cold. Does anyone have advice on layering strategies or specific fabrics that don't take up too much room? Also, is it worth bringing bulky boots, or should I just wear them on the plane to save space? Any tips from experienced winter travelers would be greatly appreciated.

Wear your bulkiest boots on the plane, absolutely. No point wasting precious luggage space on them.

Merino wool is your best friend. It stays warm even if it gets damp and doesn't hold odors like synthetics do.

I did two weeks in Switzerland and Germany with just a 40L backpack. The key is to wash your base layers in the sink every few days.

Don't bother with a heavy coat. Get a high-quality down jacket that packs into its own pocket. It's a lifesaver.

Have you considered thermal leggings? They take up practically zero space and make a huge difference under jeans.

Skip the bulky sweaters. Multiple thin layers are way more effective at trapping heat than one thick wool jumper.

Cobblestones are brutal. Make sure whatever shoes you bring have excellent grip and are broken in before you go.

I always pack a pair of lightweight slip-ons for the hotel or train. Your feet will thank you after a long day of walking.

Does anyone have recommendations for a good, packable scarf? Mine always takes up way too much room.

If you are going to the Alps, you absolutely need proper waterproof gear. Don't skimp on that just to save space.

I'd suggest packing cubes. They won't make your bag lighter, but they make organizing winter gear so much easier.

Just remember that you can buy almost anything you forget once you get there. Europe has shops too, you know!

I agree with the person who said wear your boots on the plane. Just make sure they are easy to take off for security checks.

Avoid cotton at all costs. If it gets wet, you will be cold for the rest of the day. Stick to wool or technical fabrics.

Bring a small travel umbrella. The wind in European cities can make them useless, but it's better than nothing.

Honestly, I'd bring a slightly larger suitcase than you think you need. Winter clothes are just inherently bulky.

Don't forget a portable power bank. Cold weather drains phone batteries so much faster than usual.

For the Alps, rent your heavy snow gear there if you don't want to carry it. It saves so much hassle.

Great advice so far. I'm taking notes for my own trip in February. Thanks everyone!
