My fiancé and I are starting to plan our honeymoon for next summer and we are dreaming of Europe, but we have a pretty strict budget. We really want to visit places like Italy or Greece, but we are worried about the cost of flights and accommodation during peak season. Has anyone managed to pull off a romantic European trip without spending a fortune? Any advice on which countries are more affordable or tips on how to save on travel and dining would be greatly appreciated.

Honestly, skip the major tourist hubs like Rome or Santorini if you want to save money. Try Albania or Montenegro instead; they have stunning Mediterranean coastlines for a fraction of the cost.

I agree with the Albania suggestion. We went to Saranda last year and it was incredible, plus the food is so cheap compared to Greece.

Consider traveling in the shoulder season, like late September or early October. The weather is still perfect, but flight and hotel prices drop significantly.

That is great advice! We did Italy in late September and saved hundreds on our flights alone.

Check out Portugal! It’s generally more affordable than Italy or France and the wine and seafood are top-tier.

Portugal is amazing, but avoid Lisbon if you're on a super tight budget. Head to the north or the smaller coastal towns instead.

If you are set on Italy, look into staying in 'agriturismos' in the countryside rather than hotels in the city center. It’s way more romantic and usually includes breakfast.

Use sites like Skyscanner to track flights months in advance. Set alerts and be flexible with your departure days, flying on a Tuesday is usually cheaper.

Don't underestimate the power of packing a lunch! Eating out for every meal in Europe will destroy your budget. Grab fresh bread, cheese, and fruit from local markets for a picnic.

I second the picnic idea. We saved so much money doing that in Paris and it felt way more authentic anyway.

Stay in hostels that offer private rooms. You get the social vibe and kitchen access, but you still have your own space for the honeymoon.

Is it really romantic to stay in a hostel though? I'd suggest looking for Airbnbs with a kitchen so you can cook dinner together.

Look into Poland or the Czech Republic. Prague is beautiful, though busy, but smaller cities like Wroclaw are very budget-friendly and super romantic.

Definitely check out bus travel like FlixBus between cities. It’s significantly cheaper than taking the high-speed trains if you book early.

I'd suggest avoiding the big name tours. Just walk around the cities yourselves; you'll find much better local spots that aren't overpriced tourist traps.

Congratulations on the engagement! Wherever you go, just keep your itinerary loose so you don't feel pressured to spend money on every single activity.
