I'm currently planning a two-week trip to Romania and really want to focus on Transylvania, but I'm trying to avoid the typical 'Dracula' tourist traps. I've heard the landscape and the medieval villages are stunning, but I'm having trouble narrowing down which towns are actually worth staying in. Does anyone have recommendations for hiking trails or authentic cultural experiences that aren't centered around Bran Castle? I’d love to find some hidden gems or local spots that offer a more genuine look at the region's history.

Skip Bran entirely. It's a tourist trap and honestly not even the most interesting castle in the region. Focus on Sibiu instead, it has a much better atmosphere.

I second the recommendation for Sibiu! The old town is gorgeous and it's a perfect base for day trips into the surrounding villages.

If you want authentic, look into the Saxon villages like Viscri or Biertan. They are incredibly well-preserved and the food is amazing.

Definitely check out the Apuseni Mountains if you have time. The hiking there is world-class and far less crowded than the more popular spots near Brasov.

I agree with the Apuseni suggestion. The caves and the traditional wooden architecture in that region are stunning.

Don't miss Sighisoara. Yes, it's touristy, but it's a living medieval citadel and if you go in the early morning before the tour buses arrive, it's magical.

Totally agree about Sighisoara. Also, try to hike up to the church on the hill, the view is worth it.

If you are into history, look for the fortified churches. They are unique to Transylvania and offer a really cool look at how people lived centuries ago.

Does anyone have a good recommendation for a local guide who does history tours? I'd love to learn more than what's in the guidebooks.

Honestly, you don't really need a guide for most of these places. Just rent a car and drive through the villages. You'll find plenty of local museums and heritage centers.

Rent a car, definitely. Public transport is doable but it will eat up way too much of your time if you want to explore the rural areas.

I spent a week in a small village near Fagaras and it was the highlight of my trip. Nothing beats home-cooked Romanian food in a village garden.

What about the Transfagarasan road? Is it worth the hype or just another tourist trap?

The Transfagarasan is definitely worth it for the scenery, but go early in the morning. Traffic can be a nightmare in the afternoon.

Check out the Mures county area. It's often overlooked but has some beautiful manor houses and estates that are being restored.

I'm planning to go in September. Is the weather still good for hiking then?

September is actually the best time to visit! The crowds are gone and the autumn colors in the Carpathians are absolutely breathtaking.

Just be respectful of the local traditions and people. Rural Transylvania can be quite conservative and quiet.
