My partner and I are finally planning our dream vacation to Europe for next summer, and we really want to do something unique instead of just staying in standard hotels. I saw an article about staying in actual historic castles and thought it sounded incredible, but I'm worried it might be more of a tourist trap than a comfortable experience. Has anyone here actually booked a room in one of these converted castles? I'd love to know if the experience is worth the price and if there are specific regions in Europe where the quality is better. Any recommendations or warnings would be greatly appreciated!

My wife and I stayed in a castle in Ireland back in 2019. Honestly, it was the highlight of our trip. Just make sure you check if the castle has modern plumbing before booking!

I second this. Some of those 'historic' hotels are drafty and smell like damp stone. Do your research on reviews specifically regarding room temperature.

It really depends on your budget. The luxury ones in the Loire Valley in France are stunning but definitely pricey. Are you looking for a specific price range?

I stayed in one near Salzburg, Austria. It was magical, but be aware that they are often located quite far from city centers, so you'll definitely need a rental car.

That's a great point. We made the mistake of relying on public transport and ended up spending a fortune on taxis.

Don't get your hopes up about the 'king-sized' beds. Many of these places keep the original room layouts, which can be quite cramped.

Exactly! My 'royal suite' had a tiny bathroom that felt like a closet. Still, the breakfast in the Great Hall made up for it.

I’d suggest looking into Germany along the Romantic Road. There are several castles that have been converted into boutique hotels that feel much more authentic.

I agree with the suggestion for Germany. The service there is usually top-tier compared to some of the more commercialized spots in Scotland.

Is it worth the price? It depends on if you value the aesthetic over the convenience. If you want a pool and a gym, stick to a modern hotel.

Totally agree. If you're looking for a spa experience, a castle might disappoint you. It's more about the history and the atmosphere.

We stayed in a castle in Tuscany and it was like living in a movie. The wine tasting in the cellar was an experience I'll never forget.

That sounds amazing! Do you mind sharing the name of the place? I'm heading to Italy in September.

Just be careful of 'castle-themed' hotels. They aren't the real deal and are usually just glorified motels with fake turrets.

Great advice! Always check if it's a 'historic monument' or a newer build designed to look like one.

Honestly, just do it. Even if it's a bit quirky, waking up in a castle is something you'll talk about for the rest of your life.
