I'm finally planning a trip to Europe specifically to visit major WWII sites and I'm having a hard time prioritizing. I have about ten days, and I'm torn between focusing heavily on the D-Day landing beaches in Normandy or spending more time in Berlin exploring the Third Reich history and the Cold War aftermath. Has anyone done a similar trip recently, and do you think it's feasible to try and combine both, or will I just spend the whole time on trains? I'm really looking for a deep dive rather than just hitting the main tourist spots.

Honestly, ten days is tight for both. If you try to do both, you'll spend two full days just traveling, which eats into your 'deep dive' time.

I second that. I tried doing Normandy and Berlin in one go back in 2019 and it felt like a marathon. Pick one and do it right.

If you want the D-Day experience, you really need a car in Normandy. It's not like Berlin where you can just hop on the U-Bahn to get to the museums.

Exactly. Normandy is much more spread out. You need at least three full days to cover the beaches, the museums, and the cemeteries properly.

Berlin is incredible, though. The Topography of Terror museum and the Holocaust Memorial are things you can't really replicate anywhere else in terms of scale.

Don't forget the Sachsenhausen concentration camp just outside Berlin. It’s a heavy day, but absolutely essential if you’re doing a deep dive.

I'd suggest Normandy. The atmosphere at Omaha Beach at sunrise is something I'll never forget. It’s a very different vibe from the urban history of Berlin.

I agree with the sunrise point. Normandy feels more 'hallowed ground' while Berlin feels more like an academic or political history deep dive.

Are you more interested in the military strategy side or the political/social side? That should decide it for you.

That's a great question. If you want strategy, Normandy wins hands down. If you want to understand the rise and fall of the regime, go to Berlin.

You could always do Normandy and throw in a few days in Paris, which is easy by train. That might be less stressful than trying to get to Germany.

I did exactly that last summer. Normandy for four days, then Paris for three. It was a perfect balance of history and culture.

Berlin has so much Cold War stuff too. If you go there, make sure you check out the Stasi Museum as well. It’s fascinating.

I'm with you on the Stasi Museum, but does it fit the 'WWII deep dive' theme? It's definitely post-war.

I've been to both, and honestly, Normandy left a bigger emotional impact on me. The sheer scale of the American cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer is overwhelming.

I found the opposite. Seeing the bullet holes still in the buildings in Berlin made the war feel much more 'present' for me.

Just pick one. Don't waste your precious vacation time on a TGV or ICE train. You'll regret it.

Yeah, listen to the others. 10 days is perfect for one region, but way too short for both. Stick to Normandy and do it properly with a rental car.
