I am planning a trip to Europe for next summer, but I am really trying to avoid the massive crowds in places like Venice, Dubrovnik, or Santorini. I have been reading about some lesser-known spots that are supposedly still authentic and affordable, but I am struggling to narrow down the list. Does anyone have experience visiting places like Albania, Slovenia, or maybe some of the smaller islands in the Azores? I would love to hear your personal recommendations for areas that still feel like a local secret before they become too touristy.

Albania is incredible. I spent two weeks there last summer and the beaches in the south are stunning, plus the food is so cheap compared to Greece or Italy.

I second the Albania recommendation, but definitely rent a car. Public transport can be a bit of a headache if you want to reach the really remote coves.

Slovenia is fantastic, but honestly, it's not exactly a 'local secret' anymore. Lake Bled is packed, though the Julian Alps are still quiet if you go hiking.

Have you considered the Azores? I went to Sao Miguel in July and it felt very wild and untouched. Just be prepared for the weather to change every five minutes!

If you like the Azores, check out Madeira. It’s a bit more developed but the mountain trails are just as breathtaking and less crowded than the mainland spots.

Try looking into Georgia-the country, not the state. The Caucasus mountains are mind-blowing and the hospitality is unlike anything I've experienced in Western Europe.

I agree with the person who mentioned Georgia. It’s still very affordable and the wine culture is amazing. Definitely fits the 'off the beaten path' vibe.

Look into northern Poland or the Baltic states like Estonia. Tallinn is popular, but if you go out into the countryside or the islands, it’s super peaceful and cheap.

I’d suggest avoiding the coast entirely if you want to escape crowds. Have you thought about the mountains in Bosnia? Beautiful scenery and very few tourists.

Bosnia is a great suggestion. Most people just stick to Sarajevo or Mostar, but the surrounding national parks are empty and perfect for cycling.

Whatever you do, just avoid the cruise ship ports. Once you step ten miles inland from the coast, the prices drop and the crowds vanish instantly.
