I'm currently putting together a 3-week itinerary for a trip to Eastern Europe this summer and feeling a bit overwhelmed by the options. I definitely want to hit Prague and Budapest, but I'm debating whether to add in Krakow or head further south toward the Balkans. My main goal is to balance major historical sites with some downtime in smaller, less touristy towns. Does anyone have experience with a similar route, or perhaps suggestions on how to handle the train travel between these countries efficiently? I’d love to hear your thoughts on which cities are absolute must-sees versus ones I might be able to skip.

Prague and Budapest are fantastic, but definitely don't skip Krakow! It has such a unique atmosphere and the history there is incredibly moving.

I second the Krakow recommendation. If you go, make sure to visit the salt mines, it's a total must-see.

If you want less touristy, skip the main city centers and head to the High Tatras in Slovakia for a few days. It's a great break from the urban pace.

How are you planning to travel between them? Trains in that region can be a bit slow, but they are very scenic.

Honestly, the Balkans are amazing but 3 weeks might be pushing it if you also want to see Central Europe. I'd stick to the Prague-Krakow-Budapest loop to avoid spending half your trip on a train.

That's a fair point. I tried to do too much in one trip once and ended up just exhausted. Quality over quantity!

Check out the RegioJet trains for the Prague to Budapest leg. They are pretty comfortable and much cheaper than the national carriers.

Thanks for the tip! I've been looking at Eurail but wasn't sure if it was worth the cost.

If you go to the Balkans, Sarajevo is an absolute gem. It's not as crowded as Prague and the food is incredible.

I've heard great things about Sarajevo. Is it easy to get there by train from Budapest?

Actually, trains in the Balkans are notoriously unreliable. You're better off taking a bus if you decide to head that way.

Don't forget to pack comfortable walking shoes. You'll be doing a lot of cobblestone walking in those old towns!

Solid advice. My feet were destroyed after three days in Prague last summer.

I'd skip Bratislava. It's okay for a quick lunch stop, but compared to the other cities you mentioned, it's a bit underwhelming.

I disagree! I loved the relaxed vibe of Bratislava. It's perfect for a day or two of downtime.

Three weeks is the perfect amount of time to hit these spots. Just don't over-plan every single hour or you'll burn out.

Exactly. Leave some room for 'lost time'-that's usually when you find the best hidden cafes.

Whatever you do, make sure to book your accommodation in Budapest well in advance. It gets packed in the summer.
