I'm planning a three-week trip through Europe this summer and the hotel prices are looking way higher than I initially budgeted for. I really want to see places like Paris, Amsterdam, and Rome, but I'm worried I'll run out of money just on lodging. Does anyone have any practical hacks for finding cheaper stays beyond just the standard hostel dorms? I'm open to alternative ideas like house sitting, apartment swaps, or even specific booking strategies that actually work. Any advice from experienced travelers would be greatly appreciated!

Try looking at religious guesthouses or monasteries! Many of them in Rome offer clean, very affordable rooms and they are often located in central areas.

Great suggestion, I stayed in a convent in Florence once and it was actually a really peaceful experience.

Honestly, look into TrustedHousesitters. I've used it to stay in amazing apartments for free in exchange for looking after pets. It takes some planning but saves a fortune.

That sounds risky if you're only there for a few days, usually those platforms require a longer commitment, right?

Check out Booking.com's 'mobile-only' deals. Sometimes you can snag a 10-15% discount just by booking through the app instead of the website.

Another trick: look for hotels just outside the city center, specifically near a metro line. It's much cheaper and you can be in the heart of Paris in 20 minutes.

Yeah, but factor in the cost of the metro tickets. Sometimes the savings are offset by the commute time and travel expenses.

Have you considered couchsurfing? It's not just about the free bed, but meeting locals who can show you the 'real' city away from the tourist traps.

I wouldn't recommend Couchsurfing for a first-time solo traveler in big cities, stick to hostels for safety and social atmosphere.

Look into university dorms during the summer! Many universities rent out their student rooms to tourists when students are on break. They are basic but very cheap.

Definitely try to book mid-week stays if you can. Weekend prices in places like Amsterdam are absolutely brutal compared to Tuesday/Wednesday nights.

I second the mid-week advice. I saved almost 300 euros on my last trip just by shifting my itinerary by two days.

If you're really desperate, look for campsites that offer 'glamping' tents or cabins. They are often way cheaper than hotels even in expensive areas.

Don't forget to clear your browser cookies or use a VPN when searching for flights and hotels, some sites track your location and hike prices up!
