I'm planning a trip to the Mediterranean for late September and I'm really trying to avoid the typical overcrowded tourist traps. I've already done the Amalfi Coast and the Greek islands, but I'm looking for those hidden coves that don't show up on the first page of TripAdvisor. Does anyone have recommendations for quieter coastal areas in Albania, Portugal, or maybe the smaller islands in Croatia? I don't mind a bit of a hike to reach a beach if it means I can actually find a spot to put my towel down. Any tips on how to find these spots without ruining them for the people who live there?

If you are looking at Albania, head south past Saranda towards the Himarë region. Look for Gjipe Beach; you have to hike down a canyon to get there, which keeps the crowds manageable even in high season.

That is a great suggestion, but keep in mind that Gjipe is getting quite popular lately. Still worth it for the view though!

For Portugal, skip the Algarve entirely. Head to the Alentejo coast. Places like Praia da Zambujeira do Mar are stunning, wild, and much more authentic.

I second the Alentejo recommendation. Rent a car and just drive the coastline, you will find dozens of small cliffs with empty beaches if you are willing to walk a bit.

Regarding Croatia, avoid Hvar or Brač. Try Vis or Lastovo. They are much further out and feel like the Mediterranean from 30 years ago.

Vis is amazing, but definitely don't go telling everyone! The locals value the peace there.

The best way to 'not ruin them' is to stay in small, locally-owned guesthouses rather than big resorts, and always buy your groceries from local markets instead of chains.

Exactly. And please, just take your trash back with you. It sounds basic, but you would be shocked at how many 'hidden' spots are littered with plastic now.

If you want something really quiet, check out the islands in the North Aegean in Greece, like Ikaria or Samothraki. Very different vibe from the Cyclades.

I went to Samothraki last year and it was magical. Just be prepared for the wind!

Honestly, the best advice for finding these spots is to look at satellite view on Google Maps. If there is no road leading to the beach, it is usually empty.

That is exactly my strategy too! Satellite view never lies about accessibility.

Whatever you do, just don't tag the specific location on Instagram. That is the quickest way to turn a quiet cove into a tourist trap within one season.
