My friends and I are looking to head to Europe this coming January for a week of skiing and want to experience some real snow. We are intermediate skiers, so we are looking for somewhere with decent variety but also a good social scene for the evenings. We have considered places like Zermatt or Val Thorens, but I am worried about the crowds during peak season. Does anyone have experience with these resorts or have a hidden gem that is a bit more budget-friendly? Any advice on the best way to travel between airports and the resorts would be appreciated too.

Zermatt is iconic, but honestly, it’s pricey. If you want a social scene without the insane crowds, look into St. Anton in Austria. The après-ski is legendary and the terrain is perfect for intermediates.

I second St. Anton, but it gets busy too! If you want budget-friendly, try Bansko in Bulgaria. It's not as high-end as the Alps, but your money goes way further and the nightlife is great.

Val Thorens is great for snow reliability in January, but it's massive. If you're worried about crowds, maybe look at Les Menuires in the same valley. It's cheaper and you still get access to the Three Valleys.

Don't sleep on Livigno in Italy. It's duty-free, really affordable, and the ski area is super friendly for intermediate groups.

How are you planning to get there? If you fly into Geneva, there are plenty of shared transfers like AlpyBus that are way cheaper than private taxis.

Honestly, January is actually one of the quieter months compared to February half-term. You should be fine in the bigger resorts if you avoid the first week.

If you go to Zermatt, make sure to book your train from Zurich airport in advance. It's a long journey but the scenery is unbeatable.

I'm also heading out in January! We booked a chalet in Morzine. It has a great village feel and isn't as 'corporate' as Val Thorens.

Is Morzine good for intermediates? I've heard the lower runs can get icy in January.

Yeah, Morzine is perfect for intermediates. Just head over to the Avoriaz side if the snow is thin, it's higher up.

Whatever you do, avoid the popular French resorts during the French school holidays. It becomes a nightmare on the lifts.

Thanks for the tips everyone! I think I'm leaning towards Livigno now based on the budget comments.
