I'm currently looking to plan a trip for next summer and have decided on the Balkans after reading about how much more affordable it is compared to Western Europe. I'm hoping to start in Croatia and make my way down through Montenegro and Albania, but I'm not sure if three weeks is enough time to really enjoy the route. Does anyone have advice on which cities are must-sees versus which ones might be skippable if I'm short on time? Also, what is the best way to handle transport between these countries since I've heard the bus schedules can be a bit unreliable?

Three weeks is definitely doable, but don't try to see everything. Stick to the coast and maybe one inland city per country.

I did this exact route last summer! Definitely don't skip Kotor in Montenegro, it was the highlight of my trip.

Is it really that much cheaper than Western Europe? I've heard prices have gone up a lot recently in places like Dubrovnik.

Dubrovnik is a tourist trap. Skip it and go straight to smaller towns like Cavtat or head into Bosnia for better prices.

The buses are actually fine if you use apps like GetByBus or FlixBus, but expect them to be late. Just don't book tight connections.

Albania is amazing. Make sure to visit Theth if you like hiking, it's totally worth the bumpy bus ride to get there.

I'd suggest renting a car for at least part of the trip. It gives you way more freedom than relying on the bus schedules.

Renting a car in one country and dropping it in another is usually super expensive due to cross-border fees. Stick to the bus or shared shuttles.

Don't miss Tirana! It's chaotic but has a really cool vibe and great nightlife.

Three weeks is tight if you want to see Croatia, Montenegro, AND Albania. You'll spend half your trip in transit.

What are you looking for exactly? History, beaches, or partying? That changes my recommendation significantly.

I'm mostly interested in history and local culture, not really into the party scene.

Then definitely prioritize Mostar in Bosnia. It's a short detour from the coast and the history there is incredibly moving.

Exactly, Mostar is a must. Also, check out the Ottoman architecture in Berat, Albania. It feels like stepping back in time.

Honestly, 3 weeks is perfect if you move at a moderate pace. Just pick 4-5 hubs and do day trips from there.

Watch out for the border crossings, they can take hours during peak summer season. Bring snacks and water!
