My partner and I are planning a week-long trip to the Amalfi Coast this summer and keep hearing horror stories about driving there. We really want to visit Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello, but we're nervous about the narrow roads and parking situation. Is it feasible to rely solely on the ferries and the SITA bus system, or will we end up wasting our whole holiday waiting for transport? Any tips on which towns are most accessible for someone relying on public transit would be greatly appreciated.

Honestly, skip the car. The roads are a nightmare and parking costs a fortune if you can even find a spot. Ferries are the best way to travel between towns anyway because the views from the water are incredible.

I second this. The SITA buses can get really crowded in the summer, especially between Sorrento and Positano, so if you have the budget, prioritize the ferries.

Is it true that the buses don't run very late at night? We're hoping to have some late dinners in Amalfi.

Yes, the bus schedule thins out significantly after 9 PM. If you miss the last one, you're looking at a very expensive taxi ride, so definitely check the ferry timetables for your return trips.

Stay in Amalfi town or Salerno. They are the main hubs for both bus and ferry transport, so you'll have way more options than if you stay in a smaller, isolated village.

That's a great tip. I stayed in Positano once and felt a bit trapped because everything was uphill and the buses were always packed.

Don't let the 'horror stories' scare you too much, but definitely don't rent a car. Just buy a 'Travel Costa d'Amalfi' day pass for the buses and you'll be fine.

Just a heads up: the SITA buses are often delayed due to traffic. Always leave yourself an extra 30-45 minutes if you have a ferry or tour to catch.

I actually enjoyed the bus rides! It's a bit of an adrenaline rush with the cliffside turns, and it's much cheaper than the private boat tours.

If you go to Ravello, just take the bus from Amalfi. It's a short ride but the views up there are the best in the entire region.

Whatever you do, download the 'UnicoCampania' app to check schedules. It’s not always 100% accurate, but it’s better than standing at the bus stop wondering if one is coming.
