My partner and I are finally planning a winter getaway for this December to soak up some holiday atmosphere. We've heard amazing things about the markets in Germany and Austria, but we're struggling to narrow it down to just one or two cities. We are looking for somewhere with a mix of great food, authentic crafts, and hopefully a bit of snow if we're lucky. Does anyone have a favorite market that felt particularly magical rather than just overcrowded and touristy? We'd love to hear about your experiences and any hidden gems you might suggest.

If you want magical and less touristy, skip the main squares in Munich and head to Regensburg. It’s absolutely stunning and feels like stepping back in time.

I second Regensburg! The Thurn und Taxis market there is probably the most beautiful one I've ever visited.

Honestly, avoid Cologne. It's so packed you can barely move, and the prices are a bit of a rip-off compared to smaller towns.

That's fair, but the cathedral backdrop at the Cologne market is still pretty iconic for a first-timer.

Have you considered Salzburg? It's incredibly picturesque, especially if you get a dusting of snow. Just make sure to dress very warmly!

Salzburg is great, but it gets super crowded on weekends. Try going mid-week if you can manage it.

Colmar in France is also worth a look, though it's technically not Germany or Austria. It looks like a fairytale village.

Totally agree about Colmar! It feels like a movie set, though it definitely gets busy too.

If you go to Nuremberg, try to get away from the main square. The 'Sister Cities' market nearby is much more laid back and has interesting international crafts.

I've heard Nuremberg is the most famous, but is it worth the hype? I'm worried it'll be too commercial.

It is commercial, but the gingerbread is genuinely the best you'll ever have. Just grab some and head to the smaller side streets.

Don't forget to pack good walking boots. You'll be spending hours outside on cobblestones and your feet will thank you later.

Great advice! Also, bring cash. Many of the smaller, more authentic stalls still don't take cards.
