I'm planning a culinary-themed road trip through Europe next month and I really want to move beyond the usual tourist traps. I've already got Sacher Torte in Vienna and Tiramisu in Italy on my list, but I'm looking for some lesser-known gems that locals actually swear by. Does anyone have any personal favorites, perhaps something from Eastern Europe or the Scandinavian region that I absolutely shouldn't miss? I have a major sweet tooth, so I'm open to anything from pastries to chilled puddings. Let me know what I should be keeping an eye out for in the local bakeries!

You absolutely have to try Krémeš if you find yourself in Slovakia or the Czech Republic. It’s a vanilla custard slice that is just heavenly, not too sweet but incredibly rich.

Seconding the Krémeš recommendation! It’s way better than the generic stuff you find in tourist cafes.

If you are heading to Scandinavia, skip the fancy stuff and just grab a proper Kanelbulle in Sweden. Freshly baked, with just the right amount of cardamom, it beats any dessert I've had in a restaurant.

Cardamom is key! Don't listen to the people saying cinnamon rolls are just cinnamon rolls; the Swedish ones are a different beast entirely.

When you're in Portugal, everyone says Pastel de Nata, but have you tried Pão de Ló? It's a sponge cake that is underbaked in the middle so it stays gooey. It's life-changing.

Oh man, Pão de Ló is amazing. I had it in a small bakery in Ovar and still dream about it.

Don't sleep on Poland. You need to find a place that serves Pączki, especially if you get there during the right season. Much better than a standard donut.

I'm Polish and I approve this message. Just make sure it's fresh, ideally still warm from the fryer.

Have you considered Hungarian Dobos Torta? It’s a sponge cake layered with chocolate buttercream and topped with hard caramel. It’s a bit of a classic, but locals love it.

That sounds delicious, but maybe a bit heavy for a road trip? I prefer something lighter like a fruit-based tart.

If you're in the Baltics, try the curd snacks (sūrelis). They are everywhere in the supermarkets and they are honestly such a guilty pleasure for a quick snack.

Good call! They are super cheap and perfect for eating while driving between cities.

You definitely need to try Kaiserschmarrn in Austria. It's basically shredded pancakes with raisins and plum compote. It's comfort food at its peak.

I'd argue that the best Kaiserschmarrn is found in the mountain huts, not the city center restaurants. Definitely worth the hike!

Don't forget Denmark! Look for Brunsviger. It's a yeast cake with a brown sugar and butter topping that caramelizes while baking. It's dangerously good.

I tried that in Odense last summer and I think I ate half a tray by myself. No regrets.

This list is making me so hungry. Whatever you do, just avoid the places with pictures of the food on the menu outside, and you'll be fine!
