I'm finally biting the bullet and booking a solo trip to Rome this coming October. I've always wanted to see the Colosseum and the Vatican, but I'm a little nervous about dining alone and navigating the city by myself. Does anyone have recommendations for safe neighborhoods to stay in or casual restaurants where it's not awkward to eat solo? I'd love to hear how others handled the social side of traveling alone in such a busy city.

Rome is honestly one of the best cities for solo travel! You'll be fine. For neighborhoods, look at Trastevere or Monti. They are super walkable and have a great atmosphere even at night.

Don't worry about dining alone. Italians do it all the time! Just grab a book or your phone, order a glass of wine, and enjoy the people-watching.

I second the suggestion for Monti. It's central but feels a bit more like a local neighborhood than the area right next to Termini station.

October is the absolute perfect time to go. The weather is still nice but the massive summer crowds have started to thin out a bit.

Regarding the Vatican, make sure you book your tickets online well in advance! The queues can be insane and you don't want to spend your solo trip standing in line for three hours.

Has anyone tried those group food tours? I'm planning a solo trip too and I'm worried about getting lonely after a few days.

To the person asking about food tours, they are a great way to meet people! I did one in Testaccio and ended up grabbing drinks with a couple from the group afterward.

Avoid staying too close to the main train station if you want a 'pretty' Rome experience. It's convenient for transport but can be a bit sketchy late at night.

Honestly, just eat at the bar! Most cafes and pizzerias have counter seating where you can just stand or sit for a quick bite. It feels way less awkward than taking up a whole table.

Don't overthink the 'dining alone' thing. Nobody in Rome cares who you are or who you are with. You'll likely be too busy enjoying the amazing carbonara to notice anyway.

If you get overwhelmed by the city, take a day trip to Orvieto. It's super easy to navigate by train and feels like a totally different, much calmer world.

I've been solo to Rome twice. Just keep your bag zipped and in front of you on the metro. Pickpockets are the only real thing you need to worry about.

Just go for it! You will have such a blast. Rome is magical when you can just wander around at your own pace without having to compromise on what to see next.
