I'm finally planning my first big backpacking trip across Europe this summer and I'm starting to get overwhelmed by all the travel app recommendations online. I've already got Google Maps and Citymapper, but I'm looking for suggestions on things like train booking, budget tracking, or even offline translation tools. Are there any specific apps that actually made your trip easier, or should I just stick to the basics? I really want to avoid downloading a dozen apps I'll never use, so I'd appreciate any advice from people who have done this route before.

Honestly, Omio is a lifesaver for trains and buses. It aggregates everything so you don't have to check five different national rail sites.

I second Omio! Also, definitely download Trainline. Sometimes it has better prices than Omio depending on the country you're in.

Don't forget Google Translate with the offline language packs downloaded. It saved my life in rural Italy where nobody spoke English.

For budget tracking, I swear by TravelSpend. You can share the trip with friends if you're splitting costs, which makes everything so much easier.

Wait, does TravelSpend work offline? I'm worried about data usage when I'm walking around.

Yeah, it works fine offline and syncs once you hit Wi-Fi. It's super lightweight too.

Get Airalo for an eSIM. It's so much cheaper than paying roaming fees or hunting for local SIM cards in every single country.

I used Airalo last year and it was great, but just make sure your phone is actually unlocked before you leave home!

Keep it simple. You really don't need a dozen apps. Google Maps, a good rail app, and a way to pay is all you need.

Hostelworld is essential if you haven't booked all your accommodation yet. The reviews are usually pretty honest.

I'd add Revolut or Wise to your list. Having a travel card with low exchange fees is way better than using your standard bank card.

Great advice everyone, thanks! I think I'll stick to Omio, Google Translate, and TravelSpend. That should be plenty.
