I am currently in the early stages of planning a long-distance cycling trip across Europe for next summer. I have already looked at the EuroVelo routes, but I am worried they might be too crowded during peak season. Does anyone have recommendations for quieter, scenic routes that offer good infrastructure for touring bikes? I am particularly interested in Eastern Europe or the Balkans, but I am open to any suggestions that feature great landscapes and friendly local communities. Any advice on gear or logistics for multi-country travel would also be greatly appreciated.

If you want to avoid the EuroVelo crowds, definitely look into the Via Dinarica in the Balkans. It is stunning, though some parts are more gravel-oriented, so make sure your tires can handle it.

I second the Via Dinarica suggestion. Just keep in mind that the infrastructure in Albania and Montenegro is still developing, so carry enough spare tubes and a solid repair kit.

Check out the Iron Curtain Trail, specifically the sections through the Baltics. It is incredibly flat, well-marked, and the history along the way is fascinating without being touristy.

Are you planning to camp or stay in guesthouses? That usually dictates how much gear you need to lug around.

I did a solo tour through Romania last year. The Transfăgărășan highway is a must-do, but be prepared for some serious climbing. The locals were incredibly hospitable, often offering me fresh fruit and water.

To the person who mentioned Romania, how did you find the road safety? I've heard some drivers can be a bit aggressive toward cyclists.

Honestly, stick to the smaller secondary roads whenever possible. Even in countries with 'bad' reputations for drivers, the backroads are usually quiet and peaceful.

Don't overlook Slovenia! It is small, but the cycling infrastructure is arguably the best in Europe. You can cross the whole country on dedicated bike paths.

Definitely bring a good power bank. I found that navigation apps drain the battery way faster than expected when you're out in the mountains all day.

For logistics, look into the 'Bike-on-Train' services in Central Europe. Most national rail lines allow bikes for a small fee, which is a lifesaver if you get tired or have a mechanical issue.

I'm planning a similar trip for 2025. Does anyone have a recommendation for a good lightweight tent that holds up well in Balkan storms?

Look at Big Agnes or MSR. They are pricey, but when you're stuck in a thunderstorm in the middle of nowhere, you'll be glad you spent the extra money.

Just remember to keep it simple. You don't need half the stuff you think you need. Pack light, and you will enjoy the hills much more!
