I'm currently in the early stages of planning a three-week backpacking trip across Eastern Europe and I'm looking for some advice on where to stretch my budget the furthest. I've heard great things about places like Sofia, Belgrade, and Sarajevo, but I'm curious if anyone has recent experience with the cost of living there for travelers. Are there any hidden gems that are even cheaper but still offer plenty of culture and good food? I'd love to hear your recommendations on which cities provide the best value for money right now.

Sofia is definitely a great choice if you're on a tight budget. I spent a week there last summer and could easily find hearty meals for under 5 euros.

Don't sleep on Sarajevo! It's incredibly cheap, the people are the friendliest I've met, and the coffee culture is top-tier.

I'd suggest looking into Albania, specifically Tirana and Berat. It's much cheaper than the neighboring countries and the scenery is stunning.

I second the Albania suggestion. I spent three weeks there last year and barely scratched the surface of my budget.

Is it really safe for solo backpackers in those areas? I've been hesitant to book.

Absolutely safe. Just use common sense like you would in any major Western European city.

Check out Plovdiv in Bulgaria. It's the oldest city in Europe and way more relaxed than Sofia, plus the prices are even lower.

Belgrade has a great nightlife scene but it can get pricey if you stick to the trendy clubs. Eat at the local bakeries (pekara) to save big.

I found that using regional buses instead of trains makes a massive difference in your daily expenses. FlixBus covers a lot of ground there now.

Romania is another solid contender. Brasov is beautiful and very affordable compared to the capital.

Have you considered Bosnia? Sarajevo and Mostar are fantastic and you can get a full dinner for a fraction of what you'd pay in Western Europe.

Honestly, just avoid the tourist traps in the main squares and you'll be fine anywhere in the Balkans. Great food is almost always found in the side streets.
