My partner and I are planning a trip to Europe this October and we really want to lean into the Halloween spirit. We aren't looking for standard theme parks, but rather places with a genuine history of ghost stories, old castles, or gothic architecture. Does anyone have recommendations for cities that actually celebrate the season or have great eerie vibes? We were considering Edinburgh or maybe Prague, but we are open to hidden gems if you know of any. Any advice on the best spots would be greatly appreciated!

Edinburgh is honestly the gold standard for this. The underground vaults are genuinely unsettling if you take one of the late-night ghost tours.

Agreed with the Edinburgh suggestion. Make sure you book the Mary King's Close tour in advance, it fills up super fast in October.

You should definitely consider York in England. It's often cited as the most haunted city in Europe and the narrow 'snickelways' feel like something out of a horror movie.

I second York! The Shambles at night is incredibly atmospheric. It feels like you've stepped back in time to the 1600s.

Prague is beautiful, but it's very touristy. If you want something a bit more authentic, look into Transylvania in Romania. Bran Castle is the obvious choice, but the smaller villages nearby are much creepier.

Exactly, the tourist traps in Prague kind of kill the vibe. Romania feels much more raw and 'real' when it comes to folklore.

Don't sleep on Tallinn in Estonia. The medieval old town is perfectly preserved and it gets very dark and misty in October. It feels very gothic.

Tallinn is a great shout! It's way less crowded than Edinburgh and has a really unique, eerie charm to it.

If you like history, Paris has the Catacombs. It's not exactly 'Halloween' in the traditional sense, but walking among millions of bones is about as spooky as it gets.

The Catacombs are cool, but they aren't really a 'Halloween' experience. I'd stick to the UK or Eastern Europe for that vibe.

Venice in late October is surprisingly spooky. The fog rolling off the canals at night makes everything look like a set from a gothic novel.

I've heard Venice is great, but isn't it super expensive during that time of year?

Consider Derry in Northern Ireland! They hold one of the biggest Halloween festivals in Europe, and the history there is intense.

Derry is amazing for the festival, but if you want quiet and creepy, maybe look at some of the smaller towns in Scotland instead.

Edinburgh is the best choice. Just avoid the main street tours and try to find the smaller, independent ghost walk companies.

Whatever you choose, just bring a warm coat! European autumns can be brutal, especially when you're standing around in old graveyards at night.
