I'm planning a backpacking trip across Europe this summer and want to make sure I hit the must-see spots without breaking the bank. I've heard mixed reviews about the free walking tours; some people say they are amazing, while others suggest they can be a bit hit or miss. Does anyone have specific companies or cities where the guides were particularly knowledgeable and engaging? I'm mostly hitting London, Paris, and Berlin, so any tips for those locations would be greatly appreciated. Also, what is the standard tip amount these days if the tour is actually worth it?

For Berlin, definitely check out Sandemans. They are the biggest for a reason, and the guides there really know their history. Just remember they are independent contractors, so tip well!

I second the Sandemans recommendation. In Paris, their Montmartre tour was the highlight of my whole trip.

Honestly, the 'free' tours are great, but don't expect them to be totally free. If you don't tip, it's pretty awkward. 10-15 euros is a good standard for a 2-3 hour tour.

That's exactly right. I usually tip 10 euros per person if it's a standard group. If the guide is exceptional, I might bump it to 15.

In London, try the 'Free Tours by Foot'. They are a bit more relaxed than the big commercial ones and often focus on specific neighborhoods rather than just the tourist traps.

I did a street art tour in Berlin that wasn't a 'free' one, but it was worth every penny. Sometimes paying for a specialized tour is better than the generic free ones.

I've had bad luck with free tours in Paris. The guides just seem tired and rushed. Maybe try an audio guide app instead?

Maybe you just got a bad guide? My experience in Paris was fantastic, but I specifically looked for smaller companies rather than the big chains.

Good luck with the backpacking! Just a tip: wear very comfortable shoes. You will be walking way more than you think.

Totally agree with the shoe advice. Don't be that person wearing brand new white sneakers in Berlin!

Avoid the tours that try to sell you bar crawls at the end. They usually get a commission and the quality of the walking part suffers.

That's a solid point. If they spend 20 minutes talking about the pub crawl, you know you're just a lead for them.

I personally prefer just grabbing a map and wandering. You find the best gems when you aren't following a flag.

Wandering is nice, but you miss all the context and history. I think a tour on your first day is perfect to get the lay of the land.

Check out 'GuruWalk' as well. It's a platform where local guides post their own tours. It feels much more personal than the big companies.
