My partner and I are finally planning our dream vacation to Santorini for next September, but we are feeling a bit overwhelmed by all the options. We definitely want to stay somewhere with a caldera view, but we are debating whether to base ourselves in Oia or Fira to avoid the massive crowds. Are there any hidden gems or quieter villages we should consider instead? We are also looking for recommendations on a romantic dinner spot that isn't just a total tourist trap. Any tips from those who have been before would be greatly appreciated!

Oia is beautiful but honestly way too crowded during sunset. If you want a caldera view without the chaos, look into Imerovigli. It's much more peaceful and still has some of the best hotels on the island.

I second Imerovigli! Stayed there last year and it was the perfect balance of luxury and quiet. You can easily walk to Fira if you want more action.

Avoid Fira if you hate crowds, it’s basically the hub for every cruise ship passenger. Stick to the north side of the island.

For a romantic dinner, try Metaxy Mas in Exo Gonia. It's not on the caldera, but the food is incredible and it feels much more authentic than the places in Oia.

Totally agree about Metaxy Mas, that place is a hidden gem for sure!

We went in September and it was still pretty busy. Make sure you book your restaurant reservations at least a month in advance if you want a table with a view.

September is a great choice, the weather is perfect. Not as scorching as July but still warm enough for the beach.

If you stay in Imerovigli like everyone is suggesting, check out the Skaros Rock hike. It's stunning at sunrise and you'll have the path almost to yourself.

Don't bother with the donkey rides in Fira, just walk the steps or take the cable car. It's much better for the animals.

Has anyone rented an ATV? Is it worth it to get around the island?

Yes, renting an ATV is the best way to explore! Just be careful on the main roads because traffic can be a bit crazy.

Pyrgos is also a lovely village if you want to avoid the main tourist drag. It's higher up and feels much more like 'real' Greece.

I stayed in Pyrgos and loved it, but you definitely need a rental car or ATV to get down to the caldera area.

For a romantic dinner, try Selene in Fira. It's pricey but the courtyard setting is absolutely magical for a couple.

Is Selene worth the hype? I've heard mixed reviews lately.

It's a bit of a splurge but for a first trip, it’s worth it for the experience. Just make sure to request a table in the garden.

Don't just stick to the caldera side. The black sand beaches in Perissa are cool to visit for a day, even if they aren't as 'iconic'.

Honestly, skip the beaches. They are just pebbles and not as nice as other Greek islands. Focus your time on the views and the wineries.

If you go to a winery, Venetsanos has the best sunset views, but book a table early!

Have an amazing time! Santorini is a bucket list destination for a reason, you'll love it regardless of where you stay.
