I am planning a trip to Berlin next month and I really want to dive into the contemporary art scene while I am there. I have heard about the big names like Boros Collection, but I am looking for some smaller, perhaps more experimental galleries that aren't completely overrun by tourists. Are there any specific districts or galleries that you guys would recommend for someone interested in modern installations and emerging artists? I would really appreciate any tips on hidden gems that are worth checking out.

If you want to avoid the massive crowds at Boros, check out KW Institute for Contemporary Art in Mitte. It's a bit more curated and usually has very interesting experimental installations.

Definitely head to Wedding. It's not as gentrified as Neukölln yet and there are some cool independent project spaces popping up around Gerichtstraße.

I second the Wedding recommendation! Check out Savvy Contemporary if you want something that really pushes boundaries.

Don't bother with the main tourist hubs. Just walk around Auguststraße, but keep an eye out for the smaller courtyards. That's where the real gems are.

Is Boros really that bad with tourists? I was planning on going next month too.

It's not that it's bad, it's just that you have to book weeks in advance. It's a bit of a production compared to just walking into a smaller gallery.

Look into the galleries around Potsdamer Straße. It's a bit grittier but the quality of the art is top-tier right now.

Totally agree with the Potsdamer Straße suggestion. Blain|Southern used to be there, but there are still plenty of smaller spots worth a look.

If you like video installations, check out the program at Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (n.b.k.). Always free and rarely crowded.

Does anyone know if galleries are open on Mondays? I'm only there for a long weekend.

Most galleries in Berlin are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, so plan your museum visits for those days and save the gallery hopping for Wednesday through Saturday.

Try to visit the KINDL - Centre for Contemporary Art in Neukölln. It's an old brewery building and the space itself is just as impressive as the art.

KINDL is great, but make sure you check their website first. Sometimes they have events that close the main exhibition halls.

If you want something truly experimental, look up the listings on Gallery Weekend Berlin's website, even if it's not during the actual event. They list the best independent spaces in the city.
