I'm currently putting together an itinerary for a three-week backpacking trip across Europe and I really want to prioritize some UNESCO World Heritage sites. There are so many options that it's getting a bit overwhelming to narrow them down to just ten. I'm looking for places that aren't just crowded tourist traps, but actually offer some unique history or breathtaking scenery. Does anyone have any personal recommendations for spots that lived up to the expectations? I'd love to hear about some hidden gems that might not be on every single 'must-see' list online.

Skip the main hubs like Venice or Paris if you want to avoid crowds. Try Meteora in Greece instead, the monasteries perched on those cliffs are absolutely unreal.

I second Meteora! Make sure to go early in the morning before the tour buses arrive from Athens.

If you are into history, head to Gjirokastër in Albania. It is a stunning Ottoman-era stone city and definitely not a tourist trap yet.

Is it easy to get to Gjirokastër by public transport? I am backpacking as well.

It is doable by bus from Tirana, but be prepared for a bit of an adventure on the roads!

Don't sleep on the Wieliczka Salt Mine in Poland. It sounds a bit kitschy, but the underground chapel is genuinely one of the most impressive things I have ever seen.

I found the Salt Mine way too crowded. Honestly, felt like a conveyor belt of tourists.

Everyone talks about the Amalfi Coast, but the Cilento region south of it is also a UNESCO site and significantly less packed.

Sintra is beautiful, but good lord, the lines are insane. Only worth it if you get there at sunrise.

Exactly, Sintra is a nightmare in the afternoon. If you want Portugal, try the Convento de Cristo in Tomar instead.

Check out the Skellig Michael in Ireland if you can handle the boat ride. It is where they filmed Star Wars, but the history of the monks living there is way cooler.

Skellig Michael is amazing, but it is super weather-dependent. Always have a backup plan for that day.

The Dolomites in Italy are a UNESCO site and honestly, they live up to every bit of the hype. Just hike a bit further away from the cable car stations.

If you go to the Dolomites, just avoid Lake Braies. It is just Instagram chaos now.

Consider the Wadden Sea in the Netherlands/Germany. It is a unique natural site, very quiet, and great for biking.

I'd suggest Kotor in Montenegro. It is getting more popular, but the hike up the fortress walls at sunset is unbeatable.

Kotor is beautiful, but the cruise ships ruin it during the day. Visit in the evening after they leave.

Thanks for all these suggestions! I'm definitely adding Gjirokastër and the Dolomites to my list.
