I have been reading a lot about those picturesque European villages that look like they were pulled straight out of a storybook. My partner and I are planning a two-week trip next spring and we really want to avoid the typical crowded tourist hubs like Hallstatt or Colmar. Does anyone have recommendations for smaller, quieter towns that still have that magical, medieval vibe? We prefer places with cobblestone streets and traditional architecture where we can just wander around for a few days. Any tips on which regions to focus on would be greatly appreciated!

You should definitely check out Quedlinburg in Germany. It has thousands of half-timbered houses and feels exactly like a fairy tale, but it's way less chaotic than Rothenburg ob der Tauber.

I second the Quedlinburg suggestion! It's stunning and very underrated.

Look into the Dordogne region in France, specifically Beynac-et-Cazenac. It's built right into a cliffside and the views are absolutely magical.

If you want something truly unique, go to Albarracín in Spain. It's a pink-hued medieval town tucked away in the mountains and it feels like stepping back in time.

Albarracín is amazing but be prepared for a bit of a drive to get there. It's worth every minute though!

Skip the big cities and head to the Cotswolds in England, but avoid the main tourist spots like Bourton-on-the-Water. Try smaller villages like Castle Combe early in the morning.

Castle Combe is gorgeous, but it gets packed by 10 AM. You have to be an early bird to get that 'storybook' vibe without the crowds.

Have you considered Sibiu in Romania? It has houses with 'eyes' on the roofs and the old town is incredibly charming and budget-friendly.

Romania is such a hidden gem. The Transylvania region has some of the best medieval architecture I've ever seen.

Try Dinant in Belgium. It's situated on the Meuse river with a massive citadel overlooking the town. Very fairy-tale aesthetic.

I think the user above mentioned Dinant-I'd add that if you go there, take the boat tour, it's a completely different perspective.

Look at Monsaraz in Portugal. It's a tiny walled village that overlooks the border with Spain. It's incredibly quiet and peaceful.

If you go to Italy, skip the main hubs and head to Civita di Bagnoregio. It's known as the 'dying city' because of the erosion, but it looks like a castle floating in the sky.

That's a great pick! Just make sure to wear comfortable shoes because those cobblestones are no joke.

Check out Český Krumlov in Czechia, though it's getting popular, so maybe try Telč instead if you want fewer people.

Telč is a fantastic suggestion, the main square looks like a movie set.
