I'm planning my first solo trip to Europe and I'm honestly a bit nervous about the typical party-heavy tourist spots. I'm looking for places where it's socially acceptable to just sit in a park or a cafe with a book without feeling like I need to be 'on' or interacting with people constantly. I really love architecture and history, so places with good museums or walking paths would be a huge bonus. Does anyone have recommendations for cities that are safe, walkable, and generally a bit more low-key? I'd love to hear about your experiences if you've done a solo trip like this before.

You should definitely check out Ghent in Belgium. It's much quieter than Brussels or Bruges, incredibly walkable, and the architecture is stunning.

Seconding Ghent! I spent a week there solo and it was perfect for reading in cafes.

Have you considered Ljubljana, Slovenia? It feels like a small town but has the cultural depth of a capital city. Very safe and peaceful.

Ljubljana is a hidden gem. The riverside cafes are exactly what you're looking for.

Salzburg, Austria is great if you like history and mountains. It's very easy to find a quiet corner in the Mirabell Gardens.

I'd stay away from Salzburg in peak season though, it gets crowded with tour groups. Try Linz instead if you want true quiet.

Porto is lovely, though maybe a bit hilly. The bookstores there are legendary.

Porto is beautiful but definitely not 'quiet' in the traditional sense, especially at night. It's quite lively!

If you want pure history and silence, look into Tallinn, Estonia. The Old Town is like walking through a fairytale.

Tallinn is amazing, but bring a warm coat even in spring. Very chill vibe though.

Bern, Switzerland. It’s the capital, but it feels like a sleepy village. You can walk along the Aare river for hours.

Switzerland is quite expensive for a first solo trip, just a heads up!

Try Utrecht in the Netherlands. It has all the canals of Amsterdam but without the insane party crowds.

Utrecht is the perfect suggestion. It's very easy to navigate and the locals are super polite.

Aarhus in Denmark is incredibly underrated. Great museums and a very relaxed pace of life.

I second Aarhus, the ARoS museum is a must-visit if you appreciate architecture.

Honestly, just pick a smaller city in Germany. Places like Heidelberg are perfect for solo travelers who want to read in peace.
