I'm planning a solo trip through France and Italy next month, but I'm honestly a bit nervous about eating out by myself. I love food, but the idea of sitting alone at a table in a busy bistro or trattoria makes me feel a little self-conscious. Does anyone have experience with this, or maybe some advice on how to handle the 'table for one' situation without feeling like everyone is staring? I'd love to hear how you guys manage to enjoy a nice meal alone while traveling.

Honestly, nobody cares! Everyone is too busy with their own food and conversations to notice you. Just bring a book or a journal and enjoy the atmosphere.

I totally get the nerves, but France and Italy are actually great for this. In Italy, try sitting at the bar for a quick lunch if a table feels too formal.

My best tip: go during off-peak hours. If you eat early or mid-afternoon, the restaurant is quieter and you won't feel like you're taking up a prime table for a group.

That's a great idea, but wouldn't the food quality be lower during off-hours?

Not really! In Italy, the trattorias are usually consistent. Just don't go during the super busy dinner rush if you're feeling anxious.

I love dining solo. It's the best time to people-watch. I usually just put my phone away and look at the architecture or the street life.

Do you ever find that waiters treat you differently? Sometimes I feel like they rush me because I'm alone.

Sometimes, but if you dress nicely and look confident, they usually treat you just like any other customer. Don't let the fear stop you from eating well!

Bring a Kindle or a book. It gives you something to do with your hands and makes you look like you're intentionally enjoying some 'me time' rather than just sitting there.

I've traveled solo through Italy twice and trust me, by the third day, you won't even think twice about it. You'll be too busy enjoying the wine and the pasta!
