I'm flying from the US to London next month for a work trip, and I'm always completely wiped out for the first two days after landing. I've tried shifting my sleep schedule slightly before leaving, but it never seems to make a real difference. Do you guys have any specific strategies for staying awake or adjusting to the time zone faster once you land? I've heard mixed things about melatonin and avoiding caffeine, so I'm curious what actually works for frequent travelers.

The golden rule for me is to force myself onto the local time the second I step on the plane. Set your watch forward immediately and try to sleep only if it is nighttime at your destination.

I second this. It’s brutal for the first few hours, but staying awake until at least 8 PM local time is the only way to reset your clock properly.

Have you tried taking a low dose of melatonin? My doctor recommended it, and it honestly changed my life for trans-Atlantic flights.

I used to do that, but I found it made me feel groggy the next morning. Now I just rely on lots of sunlight as soon as I land.

Sunlight is definitely key. Get outside for a walk in London immediately after dropping your bags off, even if you feel like a zombie.

Honestly, I just accept that the first two days are a wash. I don't schedule anything important for the first 48 hours if I can help it.

That's a luxury for work trips though! The OP mentioned it's a work trip, so they probably have meetings right away.

If you have meetings, avoid the heavy carbs on the plane. Eat light and stay hydrated. Dehydration makes the jet lag feel ten times worse.

What about caffeine? I’ve heard you should avoid it, but I can't function without my morning coffee.

Caffeine is fine, just cut it off by noon local time. If you drink it later, you'll never fall asleep at the right time that night.

Compression socks. I know it sounds weird, but they help with circulation and I feel way less 'heavy' when I land compared to when I don't wear them.
