My partner and I are finally planning a week-long road trip through the French Riviera this coming September. We want to avoid the typical overcrowded tourist traps and find some quieter, more romantic spots to stay. We are planning to rent a car in Nice and head west, but we aren't sure which smaller villages are worth a stop versus which ones are just overhyped. Does anyone have recommendations for scenic drives or intimate seaside towns that aren't packed with cruise ship crowds? We’d love to find a few spots with great sunset views and authentic local dining.

September is the absolute best time to go! The weather is still warm but the swarms of tourists have finally cleared out. Definitely check out Eze, though it gets busy during the day, so stay overnight and enjoy the quiet streets in the evening.

Skip Cannes entirely if you want romance. It's mostly just retail shops and expensive beach clubs. Head towards the Esterel mountains instead for the drive of a lifetime.

I second the Esterel suggestion. The red rocks against the blue sea are stunning at sunset.

You should definitely drive up to Gourdon. It’s a medieval village perched on a cliff-the views over the valley are incredible and it feels like stepping back in time.

Is Gourdon easy to navigate with a rental car? I'm always worried about those tiny French village roads.

It's a bit tight, but totally manageable if you have a compact car. Just take it slow!

Try Menton! It's right on the Italian border and feels much more authentic and relaxed than Nice or Monaco. The lemon gardens are beautiful for a romantic walk.

Menton is lovely, but honestly, if you want something truly intimate, look into Villefranche-sur-Mer. It’s much quieter than Nice and the bay is breathtaking.

Don't miss the coastal road between Nice and Monaco-the 'Moyenne Corniche'. It has the best views of the entire coast without the traffic of the lower road.

Agreed, but make sure you stop at the viewpoint near Eze for a photo op. It's a classic for a reason.

For authentic dining, avoid any place with pictures of the food on the menu. If you see a menu written on a chalkboard in French only, that's where you want to eat.

That's a great tip! I've been burned by 'tourist menu' places too many times.

Look into staying in Saint-Paul-de-Vence. It’s an art village and incredibly romantic at night when the day-trippers have left.

If you really want to avoid crowds, head a bit inland to the villages in the Var region. Places like Tourtour are gorgeous and much more 'local' feeling.

Thanks for all these suggestions! I'm definitely adding Tourtour and the Esterel drive to my itinerary now.
